The Risø TL/OSL reader

The Risø TL/OSL reader enables automated measurements of thermoluminescence (TL) and Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) signals. As the measurement system is highly sensitive and includes a reference radiation source, it is widely used for determining radiation doses in natural and artificial materials with applications in geological and archaeological dating, forensic and accident dosimetry, and radiation protection. Several state-of-the-art attachments to the TL/OSL reader allow investigations on luminescence physics in different phosphors/dosimeters.

The development of the Risø TL/OSL reader started in 1982 with an automated TL reader. In 1991 the Risø TL platform was expanded to enable OSL measurements. Since then the Risø TL/OSL reader has undergone continuous development to include new features and instrument attachments. At present, more than 400 units have been manufactured and delivered to outstanding research laboratories all over the world. Flexible and future-proof

The underlying principle of the Risø TL/OSL reader design is the flexibility and the compatibility to allow for future upgrades; this is largely achieved using a module-based system. A basic Risø TL/OSL reader can always be expanded with new attachments. Research-based innovation and close interaction with the end users ensure that the Risø TL/OSL reader is able to support scientific development, thereby meeting the ever growing needs of the research community.

Service and support

The vast majority of the 400 Risø TL/OSL readers are still operational. This is to a large extent due to the after-sales service provided to the end-users. The service comprises day-to-day accessibility via e-mail or phone, and if necessary, repair services at our laboratories or on site.

The after-sales service is provided by the same engineers and scientists, who take part in the development and production of the Risø TL/OSL reader. This group of scientist and engineers constitute an outstanding knowledge base firmly anchored on more than 30 years of experience in development, on-location installation and after-sales service of the Risø TL/OSL reader.

Research and development

The Risø TL/OSL reader is made by DTU Physics , which is an integral part of the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). With approximately 7000 students and 4500 employees DTU is the largest technical university in Denmark.

DTU Physics undertakes fundamental and applied research in luminescence physics and dosimetry. Methods routinely applied in luminescence-based dosimetry are developed at DTU Physics in close collaboration with the Nordic Luminescence Laboratory, Aarhus University. DTU Physics has unique experimental facilities for luminescence research at its Luminescence Research Laboratory, which attracts a large number of guest researchers that are involved in collaborative projects with DTU.
