How to upgrade a Risø Reader software installation

Installing the Risø software for the first time on a clean PC is normally trouble-free. Upgrading an existing installation to a newer version requires a bit more care. Please follow these steps to make the process as smooth as possible.

Step 1a. Make a backup of your existing installation. The backup can be removed when you have verified that the new installation works OK.

Copy the Risoe installation folder. This way you can quickly roll back to your current programs if something is wrong in the upgraded programs. If you have got the Pulsed OSL attachment, you should take special care to retain a copy of the license.ini file from the TL subfolder. You will need to restore this later.

On a 32-bit Windows system the parent folder is “C:\Program Files”, on 64-bit “C:\Program Files (x86)”.

Step 1b. Copy the Risoe PragramData folder. This is actually the most important backup step.

The installer will not touch this folder but a new Sequence Editor version will in many cases upgrade the settings files here. It might not be easy to go back to the original version of a settings file, if something is not working properly with the upgraded version.

By default the ProgramData folder is hidden. Just type the folder name into File Explorer or to show it open the Windows “Folder Options” dialogbox and select the “Show hidden files, folders, and drives” option.

If you are upgrading a Windows XP PC the Sequence Editor settings are stored in the folder "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Risoe".

Step 1c. The installer program will not touch your existing BIN data files, typically stored in the “C:\Risoe” folder.

Step 2. Uninstall the existing Risø software package.

After the uninstall has finished, check that the Risoe folder has been deleted from the “C:\Program Files (x86)” or “C:\Program Files” folder. If this is not the case, then delete it manually.

Step 3. Now run the installer from the new Risø distribution zip-file. Remember to unpack the zip-file into a normal folder before running the setup.exe program. If you experience any problems with access rights, you could try to run the installation as an administrator.

If the installer (setup.exe) rolls back in the middle of doing the installation, please check that Windows does not have any pending updates. If updates are pending, connect the PC to the Internet and give it time to download all updates from Microsoft, and then restart the PC.

If you have got the Pulsed OSL attachment you should now restore the license.ini file in the TL subfolder of the Program Files folder.
